What is var ?

Although var began as a private pastime, by 1997 it had evolved, with the spur of a small National Lottery grant, into a public project whose foundation-stone is this web-site. We think of it as a 'magazine', although exactly what this means in terms of the internet has never been clearly defined. This fuzzy definition however gives us the leeway to include a potentially broad variety of material within a single framework.

var is made and maintained by a small group of volunteer editors and supporters principally based in Cambridge UK, but with a widening network of friends and supporters. We aim to provide access to internet publishing of creative material - broadly speaking, 'art' - in whatever form or medium we can practically manage.

Although you will find opinion within the var site, and although claims of impartiality are bound by human nature to fall short of the ideal in actual practice, we are not campaigning for any single viewpoint or ideology, we wish to reflect the plurality of views and interests that exist in the world at large.

In addition to managing and promoting the web site, var's volunteers train newcomers to web technology and will, wherever possible, assist those with good creative ideas to realise them in web format. As you would expect, var actively seeks contributions and suggestions from all sources.

We exercise normal editorial control over the material included, and a statement of our fundamental editorial policies can be found in this section of the site. 'Fundamental' means that we apply restraints only when deemed necessary, not as a general practice.

When resources and circumstances allow, var likes to commission work for the site from individual artists and creative groups. Commissions are normally advertised here on the var site, and in periodicals such as artist's newsletter.
