The writing of 'mayday' has been a hybrid of creative collaboration.
Contributors were originally told that their names would not accompany whatever they submitted. The idea was to create a discursive community of responses. We have honoured that commitment, although you will find a full list of contributors here. Every submission has been represented, one way or another. We have, in effect, made another writing from the contributions; through a combination of our selections, our ordering and more importantly the multiple rewritings and rereadings made possible by the hypertext links.
Selections were made so that pages could load quickly and be read almost at a glance. This makes 'mayday' feel plain, unjazzy, without the fireworks and whistes of more graphically embellished sites. The photographic work, for example, was reduced in file size so as to load quickly and still be readable.
In any respects, the 'problem' of plainness does not seem out of step with the issue that everyday observation, as primary material, raises.
What stands is a 'performance' of the day through a range of materials, into an electronic location using available current technology, designed to be towards the accessible, rather than the techno-elitist, end of the net-user's scale. We welcome any feedback.
