avoided people fretting about the computer,

ground roots of maize in boiling liquid nitrogen,

extracted RNA, concentrating the expressed genes.

But a beautiful day and a bike ride to the botanic

gardens to pot up mutant maize, a stroll to the

aseptic growth chamber in old biochemistry building

sealed with a sliding steel bolt, checked on

transgenic baby weeds, waiting for them to seed.

Fan lights and controlled temperature, though

warmer today with the sun outside

(actually broken - - the room over the weekend

overheated killing all plants inside)

People lounging in square of grass between the labs,

me popping in at the back door under the arch of live

old ginko, quite happy!

I speak briefly to the saleswoman from Stratagene

about cloning supplies, pretend I'm buying plasmids,

enzymes, sequencing systems
