And as I sauntered out to vote, amid the rising sun of spring, the flowers fluttering in the wind like a red army bouquet, I was stopped in my tracks by the sight of a newly installed surveillance camera. At the top of the square in which I abide with the we there is now a very tall black post, much higher than a standard lamp-post on the top of which are placed two c.c.t.v. cameras. Rumour has it that these cameras are fitted with their own windscreen wiper and water jets so that they can be cleaned automatically. There has been some speculation as to the purpose of the large pole as it was being built. Only on that very day, at least to this observer, did the purpose become apparent. But perhaps this observer should confess that her attention is more often directed at the moss than at at the mass.
