The Turner Prize

Mr.Art I might enter the planet Pluto or Venus for the Turner prize.

Var Wasn't it Venus?

Mr.Art Oh, it's Venus, yes it is Venus isn't it.

Var Does it matter which it is?

Mr.Art Well, it does really but I can't think why now.

It's a bit like Damien Hirst entering half a sheep. Once you've done half a sheep, you've done half a cow. - it's no different, you know.

It's just the concept really of one of the planets...

Var Pluto's a lot further away though.

Mr.Art Yes.

Var It would be harder to document, I'd think.

Mr.Art Perhaps Venus then.

Var Is it anything to do with the idea of the different planets, Pluto king of the underworld and all that?

Mr.Art I suppose, yes. I'm not really knowledgeable about what each of the planets symbolises, in astrology particularly; different emotions and different points of view.

I think the sub-atomic particle would be a good one in the Turner Prize or possibly the oxygen molecule called Ernie. I might take the oxygen molecule called Ernie from my room in a glass jar, release it in the gallery and people can come and view it in the gallery. It's a conceptual idea, a sort of fantasy idea.

And then you have a piece of paper saying - you own the oxygen molecule called Ernie. You sell the piece of paper to, preferably, Saatchi.

Var Would everybody get a glass jar to keep it in? Or would it just follow you home?

Mr.Art He's a very obedient oxygen molecule. But the good thing is they can't prove that it hasn't followed you home.

Var I'm not an expert on molecules at all, I know they sometimes turn into different types of molecule. Is an oxygen molecule likely to remain an oxygen molecule?

Mr.Art That's a good point. If someone lit a match in the gallery it'd be a bit hazardous, because it might turn into a carbon dioxide molecule. Which would be art evolving I suppose, quite interesting. But only I would know if Ernie had been changed in any way at all.
